As a retired Chief Superintendent of the Ontario Provincial Police I believe that the community must enjoy a fundamental confidence in the police. The behaviours displayed by police service members must provide that assurance.
As an instructor in the Police Foundations Program at Georgian College my students have participated in the Principles and Values in Policing, and, Police Service Excellence, on-line learning programs offered by Georgian College and Magna Carta Training Inc. These two courses teach the fundamental philosophies of ethical policing coupled with providing excellence in client service. The courseware is relevant and topical and the Learning Management System housing the courses is robust and students find it easy to navigate.
As an instructor the audit trail is a great tool to monitor student performance or lack thereof and ensures those that have done the work get the credit for it.

The Protection, Security and Investigations / Police Foundations Program at Conestoga College offers a common first year curriculum enabling students to develop fundamental theoretical thinking. One such course, Principles of Ethical Reasoning, assists the students to develop critical thinking skills by examining ethical principles in our civil society. A component of the course offered by Conestoga, partners with Magna Carta Training Inc., to incorporate their on-line module: Principles and Values in Policing.
The people at Magna Carta are always available to assist students in accessing and navigating the course. They went the extra mile to provide our instructors with Lesson Planning hints of utilizing the language of the Magna Carta module, to parallel that of our course text. As a result, students found an easy connection between the relevant text material and examples in the Magna Carta course.
As a retired police officer, I believe that public trust and confidence in policing is maintained by an ethical standard of conduct. It is a responsibility shared by police officers; each individually and all collectively. The course module offered by Magna Carta Training Inc. assists learners to understand the core values of policing and appreciate the underlying integrity exercised by countless police professionals in our communities...every day.

Thank you for the ethics courses (magna carta) I did in your class. The certificates have been a very good conversation piece, one in my interview with the OPP and also in the advisory meeting I had with the Chiefs of Police and Board from the school. Both parties were interested and impressed with the certificates and that I had already received this training/education. Thank you again for your help.
I thought that the Police Service Excellence and the Principles and Values in Policing e-courses were very valuable to me. They look great on a resume when I apply for a job as customer service is a big part of any job. Also, the fact that they were online was beneficial because I could look at the course and the information anytime and anywhere I wanted. I could do the course when I had time and I found this very helpful.
I found the courses were very straight forward and easy to navigate and I didn't have any questions or problems.
Lastly, these courses make a good part of our Introduction to Policing course. They definitely are a good thing to keep around because we can use these courses for years to come to refresh our memory and impress recruiters. Thank you.
I found the courses very helpful to learning more about customer service and the ethical standards involved on policing. In the future, I will be able to use these two online courses as a reference for real life scenarios both with the public and fellow officers. I thoroughly enjoyed these courses because of the interactive way in which it was presented, and the content of the courses. I think that it is an excellent idea for all future and current Police Officers to complete these courses. Most of the info presented in the courses was common sense to me, but for those lacking in common sense, I'm sure this was a good lesson, and will help us all in future dealing with other people, both on duty and off duty.
It honestly was a great course, and you should definitely make it mandatory that students pass it in order to pass Police Foundations, or even just your class, it gave me a lot of knowledge that I did not have but it nonetheless still gave me extra knowledge on ethics, and how certain situations should be handled as well as how co-workers should be dealt with.
So basically, in a nut shell, it really was a great course and I most definitely learned a lot by taking it. Thanks.

From participating in the online police courses there were multiple benefits that I came across. I believe the main benefit from completing these courses is the learning you gain while doing so. The way this course is set up, you are able to know the incorrect questions and go over them to make sure you know the material in full at the end of the experience.
Another benefit to this courses completion is participation and improving in the aspect of online courses. The topics that were covered through this are very important to understand and know while attaining a career in law enforcement. Receiving this certificate has encouraged me to continue working hard in everything I do and to focus on the things I want to gain from my college experience.
I thought the 2 online courses were very informative and helpful. They gave a lot of information that will help when dealing with real life issues when and if I become a police officer. I really liked how they had case studies with made up scenarios and you had to answer the questions at the end of it.
They were fun. I also liked how, if you failed it the first time, it told you where you went wrong. You could read over the correct answer before trying the test again. The only thing that was a bit difficult was having to pay out of our pocket for the 2 courses.
I wish that they had some how been included in the course. I had to do the courses a bit later than I wanted because I was waiting for money from my work. So I had to wait to get paid before I could start them. Not a big deal though. I think we will all benefit from these courses.
I thought the advantages to doing the Magna Carta online courses was that it showed who actually was putting forth the effort, and showed us that because we didn’t have the teachers help, we relied on networking with our peers for information and instruction. Having the chance to help others helped us notice that we understood what we were learning enough to explain it to someone else.
I think that having the certificates will benefit us because it is something that we can add to our portfolio with other certificates that we've earned on our own time. The contents of these portfolios show who’s truly determined and who’s just attending school and going through the motions.
